While on Ibiza electronic music tends to dominate the headlines, once a year, its little sister island Formentera celebrates musical diversity with the annual Formentera Jazz Festival.
In 2024, the admission-free event returns for its 10th edition with a diverse programme and surprises from Thursday, June 6th until Sunday, June 9th.
Founded in 2015 with the support of the Formentera Island Council, the Formentera Jazz Festival (FJF) has established itself as an essential event for jazz and music enthusiasts in its broadest expression. With the mission to connect the public with the exceptional natural and cultural beauty of the island, the five-day series of concerts, exhibitions and workshops provides a lively space for musical expression.
Welcoming both classic styles of jazz and its most daring contemporary and experimental fusions, over the course of a decade the Formentera Jazz Festival has established itself as an unmissable meeting for jazz fans and professionals from all over the world, with memorable performances by emblematic figures and emerging talents such as Jorge Pardo, Antonio Lizana, Marco Mezquida, Duquende, Tonina, Carlos Sarduy and Alexander Delange – to name just a few.
For its 10th anniversary, this year’s poster was designed by Piter Castillo and features a bird locally known as the Puput (hoopoe) – a symbol of freedom and joy – which perfectly embodies the spirit of the festival. Native to the Balearic Islands, the animal not only represents regional identity and the connection with local nature, but also invites attendees to ‘fly high’ during the musical experience offered by the FJF.
From the fusion of rhythms brought to you by Andrés Coll & The Groove Machine, the classic swing of the Ibiza Cool Jazz Orchestra, avant-garde compositions by Magdalini or the tropical heat of Gulf of Guinea & Lady Avocado, the Formentera Jazz Festival 2024 offers a wide range of musical expression. Furthermore, the Alfredo Rodríguez Trío, the World Groove Collective and Nacho Marco add to the deep exploration of the diverse landscapes of jazz, culminating with a jam session that promises to be the cherry on top of the events 10th edition.
The programme also includes the exhibition “A Decade of Jazz: Visual Notes of Magic in Formentera”, and a percussion workshop with Maxwell Moya Wright.
Always free and open to all, the FJF will be held in the emblematic spaces of Ses Roques, Plaça San Francesc and Chezz Gerdi. In addition to the musical programming, the festival has more surprises planned that will be announced soon, promising to expand the festive experience for all attendees.
Official collaborators in this 10th Edition include the Consell Insular de Formentera, Culture Area, GOIB – Balearic Islands Tourism Agency, Restless Culture, Alhambra Beer, Chezz Gerdi, Ses Roques, Save Posidonia Project, Formotor, Formentera Lines, Sons Formentera, Center Bar, Radio Illa, and It’s Mares.
